BOARD TRAINING SERIES
(3-part series includes one in-person workshop on September 13 and two Zoom webinars on September 28 & October 25)
This series of three workshops is designed to prepare talented community members for board service. Suitable new and current board members, Executive Directors of new and young nonprofits, and soon-to-be board members.
Participants will…
- Get educated on the nonprofit landscape, the benefits of board service, the role of the board, and specific responsibilities
- Gain practical and actionable knowledge of fundraising, finance & governance, expectations, and skills
- Discuss board meetings, trends, and best practices in board service
- Engage in hands-on exercises such as building a board bio and attending a mock board meeting
- Grow confidence in ability to serve and make a difference
Attendees will receive a binder full of handy, curated reference documents to refer to time and again.
In Session 3, we’ll share current trends and best practices and answer the most frequently asked questions. What is the purpose of board meetings? How can everyone participate and be heard? What does a “good” meeting look like? Are boards going back to in-person meetings or is Zoom here to stay? Should I serve on a committee? What is a conflict of interest? What information goes in the minutes? We’ll even have a mock board meeting!

Liana Toscanini founded the Nonprofit Center of the Berkshires (NPC) in 2016 after 20 years of volunteering in the Berkshires. She learned the art of fundraising and grant writing on the job, helping to restore the historic Sandisfield Arts Center building. Her corporate marketing background proved useful in her various board roles, assisting nonprofits with PR, marketing, and fundraising, and in her job as Development & Marketing Director for Community Access to the Arts (CATA) where she worked for nine years.
For the past three years, NPC has focused on volunteerism including board training. Liana developed a board training curriculum for OLLI in 2019 and has since shared variations of this training with nonprofit boards, leadership groups, and more recently, in a video series “Intro to Board Service,” designed to encourage people to say “Yes” to joining a board.
She is the recipient of Berkshire Magazine’s “Berkshire 25” Award (2018), a 1Berkshire Trendsetter Award (2018), and an Unsung Heroine Award (2006) from the MA Commission on the Status of Women.
